New York, NY– One World Trade Center, the gigantic building being built to replace the twin towers destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks officially became New York’s tallest skyscraper today.
The monstrous 1,250-foot-tall building took its title this morning after steel columns were erected to push it past its local predecessor, the Empire State Building. The iconic Empire State building stands at actually 1,454 feet tall if you count its 250-foot antenna, without it, however, the 1WTC takes the title.

Even with its enormous height, construction on One World Trade Center is still ongoing. Floors are being added to the so-called “Freedom Tower” and it won’t reach its full height until next year when it’s predicted to become the tallest building in the United States and the third tallest in the world.
At it its completion it will have a 408-foot antenna and stand at 1,776 feet, a symbolic way to commemorate the year the Declaration of Independence was signed.
