How To Turn Your Hobby Into A Career
(StatePoint) If you’re unemployed, underemployed, or unhappy with your job, you’re not alone. Not only is the economy still in recovery mode, but according to The Conference Board, job unhappiness among American workers is at the highest level it has been in over 20 years of research.
That’s why an increasing number of people are turning their hobbies and passions into a viable business. But how does one get started on such a venture?
“It’s all about building an online business around your interests and the lifestyle you want to enjoy in order to establish yourself as an expert in your field,” says Scott Fox, an online entrepreneur and author of the new book “Click Millionaires: Work Less, Live More with an Internet Business You Love.”
Fox believes this isn’t as hard as it sounds. He is offering some practical tips on how to turn your weekend pastime into a full-time money-making operation:
Don’t over-think your new business. Take action instead!
Identify a niche industry, interest or community where you have expertise and interest.
Brainstorm and buy a domain name that includes keywords important to your niche, is easy to spell, and is memorable.
Set up a blog and post to it often. Many blog publishing platforms are free to use, such as Weebly.com, Blogger.com and WordPress.com. But be sure to have your own domain name as it will appear more professional.
Keep up-to-date on information pertaining to your industry. Use “Google Alerts,” a free service, to receive email alerts on news searches pertaining to your selected interests.
Network with the top 20 professionals in your industry or target community via email, Facebook, Google+, or relevant community forums. Leave comments and questions on your contacts’ blogs and invite them to read and submit to your blog.
Build your brand and direct traffic to your blog, site and Facebook page by soliciting comments and feedback from your audience.
Keep at it. The best way to show up in search engine results is to consistently publish.
