AKA—Epsilon Eta Omega and Sigma Rho Chapters Host Annual MLK Day of Service Activities

Claremont, CA -- Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s aspiration of diversity in community interaction, the Eighth Annual MLK Day of Service Sunday Supper was hosted by Epsilon Eta Omega and Sigma Rho Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., on January 20, 2019.  A diverse group of individuals from neighboring communities comprised the “standing-room-only” audience that assembled at Claremont Graduate University to engage in the type of passionate dialogue that exemplifies Dr. King’s vision and legacy.

MLK-inspired songs and a video featuring images chronicling Dr. King’s journey, greeted the guests upon arrival.  Welcoming words were presented by Cleopatre Thelus, Committee Chairman, followed by a brief address from Epsilon Eta Omega Chapter President Andrena G. Dancer.  Chapter member Gerry Darden subsequently introduced special guests, as well as Chapter Vice-President Dr. Regina Hamilton, who delivered a stirring invocation.  While the guests enjoyed a complimentary meal and beverages, Cleopatre Thelus led an interactive exercise associated with Dr. King’s philosophy—stimulating several rousing group discussions.

Additional activities included a presentation of door prizes; an explanation, by Chapter Member Mattie T. Johnson, of PEARLS of Service, Inc.—a nonprofit arm of Epsilon Eta Omega Chapter—followed by the presentation of $500.00 book scholarship awards to high school juniors: Sulailah Edwards (3.57 GPA) and AmenRa Porter (3.93 GPA).  After announcements and closing remarks, the entire audience was invited to assemble for a group photo—delivering an amiable conclusion to an exhilarating afternoon.

Continuing in the spirit of MLK Day of Service, the members of AKA—Epsilon Eta Omega Chapter hosted a Breakfast and Clothing Giveaway on January 21, 2019, in partnership with other organizations.  A multitude of openly-appreciative men and women attended the event, where breakfast was provided, as well as clothing and pre-packaged toiletries.  Marking the 12th year of this endeavor, Epsilon Eta Omega Chapter members admirably personified the theme of “A Day On, not a Day Off”, to commemorate Dr. King’s remarkable foresight and legacy.
